In 2006, The Young Women’s Leadership School (TWYLS) of Astoria opened with a class of sixth graders – this is our first school serving students younger than grade seven. TYWLS of Astoria is a replication of our flagship school, TWYLS of East Harlem, in partnership with the NYC Department of Education and The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The school offers low-income students an outstanding college-preparatory education, attention, and, hands-on learning where girls can thrive academically.

Foundation Supported Activities:
YWL Network (YWLN) develops partnerships and provides resources and direct support services to our students and staff. Our work focuses on four priority areas: College Preparation, Math, Science and Technology, Leadership and Female Adolescent Development. A full-time CollegeBound Initiative (CBI) counselor works with girls beginning with the first tenth grade class to help attain college access. We also support new program initiatives, summer programs, after school programs and special events like career days, leadership lectures and more. YWLN supports its teachers and principals by providing professional development, teacher grants, and leadership support.
